Holy Week 2019

This year we are again joining with Hope Lutheran in El Sobrante during our Holy Week worship services.

Sunday, April 14th Palm and Passion Sunday

Join us at 10:00 am for Worship. As we begin our worship
we will gather outside on the labyrinth (weather permitting!) and enter the Sanctuary to the sounds of singing. We are reminded that the movement of this day—from shouts of praise to words of denial and cries for crucifixion—mirrors the path of discipleship.

Thursday, April 18 Maundy Thursday

  • Potluck Meal 6:30 p.m.
  • Service Follows at 7:30 p.m.

With nightfall our Lenten observance comes to an end, and we gather with Christians around the world to celebrate the Three Days of Jesus’ death and resurrection. At the heart of the Maundy Thursday liturgy is Jesus’ commandment to love one another. As Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, we are called to follow his example as we humbly care for one another, especially the poor and the unloved. At the Lord’s table we remember Jesus’ sacrifice of his life, even as we are called to offer ourselves in love for the life of the world.

Maundy (meaning command) Thursday is a night when we gather and we share a meal in Christian Fellowship. We commit ourselves to the commandment given to us by Christ to love one another as Christ loves us. Think of it as a vow renewal. For so many of us, love and food are entwined. Again this year we ask that you bring your favorite side dish to share with all who gather for the meal. There is a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall to help us make sure we have enough dishes coming in. Please make enough to serve 15 and bring it ready to go on the serving table.

Also for this event, we ask that you bring your own plates and cutlery and also a safe (and perhaps favorite) candle to be used for the service. Doing this helps minimize clean-up so when we leave the sanctuary in silence after stripping the altar, we can get home fairly quickly. We’ll go home with bellies and hearts full of love, ready to face the heavy words of Good Friday, the anticipation of the Saturday Vigil, and to celebrate, with great love and thankfulness, the joy of the always coming Resurrection.

Friday, April 19 Good Friday

The ancient title for this day—the triumph of the cross—reminds us that the church gathers not to mourn this day but to celebrate Christ’s life-giving passion and to find strength and hope in the tree of life. We will offer worship at two different times this day:

Noon: Worship at Christ Lutheran

A worship of prayer and meditation

7:00 pm at Hope Lutheran, (2830 May Rd) El Sobrante

A Tenebre worship service, a quiet service of light and shadows.

Saturday, April 20 Easter Vigil

We gather at Christ Lutheran This is the night! This is our Passover with Christ from darkness to light, from bondage to freedom, from death to life. This is the heart of our celebration of the Three Days and the pinnacle of the church’s year. The resurrection of Christ is proclaimed in word and sign, and we gather around a pillar of fire, and hear ancient stories of our faith.

Easter Sunday, April 21st

  • 8:00 am Breakfast and Fellowship
  • 10:00 am Festival Worship
  • 11:30 Easter Egg Hunt

Come to join in the grand celebration. We begin with a pancake breakfast (prepared by our expert pancake maker, Scott!), followed by a festival worship with fabulous music and a celebration of our faith. And we end with a fun Easter Egg Hunt for our youngest members.
